Hilary Makes Her Mark on the Broadway Brick Project

The Mayor of Bridgwater, Councillor Kathy Pearce, and her Mayoress, Sue Young, visited the Broadway Brick Project on Wednesday 30 July and signed up to the artwork alongside Eastover county councillor Hilary Bruce, seen here adding her contribution.

Hosted by Fraisia Bruist-Papazian and Dan Petley of Brick Project CIC, the visit highlighted the collaborative effort between local artists, residents, and organisations to transform the once-plain façade at the junction of St John Street and Broadway.

With the support of the Bridgwater Town Deal, the project is turning a public wall into a colourful mosaic of hand-painted bricks — each one telling a unique story.

From fun and light-hearted messages to deeply moving tributes, the project is a powerful reflection of the Bridgwater’s community spirit, creativity, and pride.

Cllr Kathy Pearce and her Mayoress Sue Young joined in by painting a brick, leaving their own mark on this growing artwork.

“This creative community initiative has truly captured the imagination of Bridgwater locals,” said Cllr Pearce. “It’s wonderful to see such a joyful, inclusive project bringing people together in such a meaningful way.”

Councillor Brian Smedley, Leader of Bridgwater Town Council, said:
“This project is a brilliant example of what happens when you give people the tools to be creative and take pride in their town. It started as a simple idea—paint a few bricks—and ended up as a bold, beautiful statement from the whole community. The wall now tells stories of Bridgwater past, present and future, and every brick is a piece of our shared identity. It shows what we can achieve when we work together.”

On completion, the wall will be permanently varnished to preserve the artwork and ensure its legacy endures for years to come.
